How to Choose a Web Design Company in Sri Lanka: A Practical Checklist

A step-by-step checklist for choosing a web design company in Sri Lanka: what to look at in their work, what to ask, and the warning signs to avoid.

Choosing who builds your website is a bigger decision than it looks. The site will be the place customers check before they call you, so a poor build costs you enquiries for years. A good one quietly earns them.

This checklist is meant to be used. Go through it with every company you are considering, including us. We are a Sri Lankan agency offering web design and landing pages, and we would rather you ask hard questions than sign without them.

Step 1: Know what you need before you shop

Write a short brief. It does not need to be formal. It should answer:

  • What does the website need to achieve (calls, WhatsApp messages, bookings, orders)?
  • Who are your customers and which languages do they use?
  • Which pages do you expect, and which features (gallery, shop, booking form)?
  • Do you already have a logo, photos and text?
  • What is your rough budget and your deadline?

A clear brief gets you comparable quotes and shows you which companies ask good questions in return.

Step 2: Look at their real work

Ask for links to live websites, not just screenshots.

  • Open them on your phone. Most visitors will do the same. Check that the text is readable, buttons are easy to tap and the pages load quickly on mobile data.
  • Look at variety. Do all their sites look like the same template, or do they fit each business?
  • Check the details. Are the pages tidy, with sensible headings and no broken links or missing images?
  • Ask what they personally did. Was the agency responsible for design, development and content, or only part of it?

If a company has only just started and has few live projects, that is not a disqualifier by itself. Ask how they will prove quality, for example with a small paid first stage or a detailed sample.

Step 3: Ask how they work

A professional company can explain its process simply. Listen for:

  1. A discovery stage where they ask about your business before designing anything.
  2. A design preview that you approve before development.
  3. A testing stage on real phones and different browsers.
  4. A clear launch plan, including how the domain and hosting are connected.
  5. A handover that explains how to update the site.

If the answer is "we send you a link when it is ready", press for more detail.

Step 4: Check the technical basics

You do not have to be technical to ask these questions:

  • Is the site mobile-first and fast? Ask how they check page speed.
  • Will the site be set up for search engines? Good agencies set titles, descriptions, headings, image text and a sitemap. No honest company can guarantee a first-page ranking, so be wary of anyone who does.
  • Is it secure? The site should use HTTPS, and forms should not expose your data.
  • How are images handled? Large uncompressed photos are a common cause of slow sites.
  • Which technology is used? There are many valid choices. What matters is that it is maintained, that you are not locked in, and that someone can take over later if needed.

Step 5: Understand ownership

This is where many people get caught out. Before you pay, confirm in writing:

  • The domain name is registered in your name or you have full control of it.
  • You can get the hosting login or the files, or the agency explains why hosting is managed for you and what happens if you leave.
  • You own the content and design you paid for, including logos and graphics.
  • You receive login details for anything built for you, such as an admin area.

Step 6: Read the quote carefully

A good quote lists what you get. Check that it states:

  • The pages and features included.
  • What is not included, such as photography, copywriting, domain, hosting or ongoing SEO.
  • The number of revision rounds.
  • The timeline and the payment schedule, ideally tied to milestones.
  • What happens after launch: support period, maintenance options and costs.

If you are unsure what a fair price looks like, our guide on how much a website costs in Sri Lanka explains what drives the numbers.

Step 7: Judge how they communicate

The way a company behaves before you hire them is the best preview of how they will behave afterwards.

  • Do they reply promptly and clearly?
  • Do they ask questions, or just agree to everything?
  • Are they honest about what they cannot do or what will take longer?
  • Do they explain things without jargon?

Good communication, preferably on a channel you actually use such as WhatsApp, prevents most project problems.

Warning signs

  • Guaranteed Google rankings. Search results depend on competition and time. No one controls them.
  • No written agreement or a vague quote that cannot be compared with others.
  • They own your domain or hosting, or refuse to hand over access.
  • A price far below everyone else with no explanation of what is cut.
  • No portfolio or references, or only images of designs that they cannot link to.
  • Pressure to pay in full immediately with no milestones.
  • Copied content, stolen photos or ready-made templates passed off as custom design.

A short scorecard

For each company, give a score from 1 to 5 on these points, then compare:

QuestionScore
Live work I can open and judge
Clear process
Mobile speed and quality
Written, detailed quote
Ownership of domain and files
Support after launch
Communication and honesty

Do not choose purely on the total price. A slightly higher quote from a company that scores well across the board is often cheaper in the long run.
